Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
When I was 14, one of my friends stole an ipod mini and I asked him “yo lemme knock” Im searching through the ipod and I come across a song entitled “It aint hard to tell” by who would quickly become my favorite artist, Nas. I was familiar with his music prior to that day, but I really grew to admire him as an artist after the first listen of his first album “illmatic”. It became the soundtrack to my life, every word, every beat, every sample…My ears were truly blessed with greatness.
I became obsessed with learning more about him, where he came from, when was he putting another album out etc. That same year I bought my first CD. It was Nas’s 2004 album release entitled “Street’s Disciple”. I loved it. Listened to it everyday. Although I was young, I had an understanding of lyrics, which was something not alot of my peers couldnt appreciate. Because of that I always felt I was mentally on a different level, not better then everyone, but different. As I got older, he still was a constant artist on my playlist, and I always catch something that he says in his songs, that I didnt catch before when I was younger. I continue to learn from this man every year and have never stopped enjoying his music and never will. Granted I dont agree with all his music, but thats all in what it is to be imperfect and human.
Nas is also one of my major influences in my poetry. Ive always admired the way he articulates in his rhymes, and he does it with a swagger and charisma like no other.
Ok. Rant Over. What inspired me to write this is when I was listening to “Cant forget about you” by Nas f/Christtete Michelle. Idk why but that song has got me in that mood to think.
